A few weeks ago, one of our mentees told us she didn’t have enough of a very basic necessity: underwear. She is currently staying in a residential facility, where you might assume basic needs like clothing would be easily met. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case. Another mentee staying at the same facility shared that she had only a couple of pairs, too. We soon learned that many of the other young girls there were facing the same challenge. When a young person enters a residential program, they often arrive with only a few clothing items. If family members can’t bring additional clothes, or if limiting contact is in the young person’s best interest, they may be left to figure out these basic needs on their own.But our mentees didn’t have to.Because they are connected to Allies, they had a safe person they could turn to. When our Program Coordinator, Amanda, heard what was happening, she knew she needed to do something. Amanda shared a simple request on social media: help provide underwear and socks for our two mentees. What happened next was a beautiful example of community care.People responded with such generosity that Amanda was able to deliver more than enough underwear and socks, not just for our two mentees, but for ALLof the young people staying at the facility. This story isn’t just about underwear and socks. It’s about restoring dignity. It’s about showing a young person that their needs matter and that their community cares about them. And perhaps most importantly, it’s about creating another small moment of trust. Another reminder that someone is there for them. Another experience that helps them believe they don’t have to face everything alone.
