Seven years ago, one of our mentors was matched with a mentee who needed a safe and caring adult in her life.A few years later, the mentee moved outside of Allies’ service area. The formal mentoring relationship may have changed, but the connection they built did not end.

Over the years, there have been times when they talked often and other times when months passed without communication. Still, her mentor continued to reach out and remind her that someone was in her corner.

After another long period without talking, the mentor sent her a birthday message. This time, the mentee responded. She shared that she still had the handmade quilt she had given her nearly three years earlier. Through everything she had experienced and all the changes in her life, she had kept it. More than that, the quilt had become a source of comfort for her.

The quilt was made by the mentor’s mother, who called it a “hug blanket.” When the mentor gave it to her mentee, she hoped it would offer warmth and remind her that she was cared for. The mentor’s mother has since passed away. After hearing how much the quilt still meant, the mentor shared that she also has a quilt made by her mother. When life feels difficult, she wraps herself in it and imagines receiving a warm hug. She encouraged her mentee to do the same and remember that her mentor, the Allies team, and her grandmother in heaven are all sending their love and support.

This story isn’t just about a quilt. It’s about the comfort of knowing someone is still there, even after time has passed. It’s about having a safe person to return to when life feels difficult. And perhaps most importantly, it’s about the lasting impact of showing up. Seven years after they were first matched, this mentor is still in her mentee’s corner, offering another reminder that she is seen, cared for, and never alone.
